Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.

D.D. Rege played an active role in Maharashtra during the Indian freedom struggle and was closely associated with Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. His hobbies included painting, reading and writing, for all of which he received several accolades and became extremely wealthy. His love for art encouraged him to start a museum. He began curating belongings of various saints as he thought that they had extremely committed lives, which often went unnoticed.

A part of the Marathe Household, the D.D. Rege Museum is a vast, comprehensive collection of photographs of various saints and their articles that range from old footwear, necklaces, shawls, and religious articles. The collection has been put together by Late D.D. Rege, and the museum and its collection are now being taken care of by his daughter, Shivadurga Marathe. D.D. Rege met most of the saints whose articles he has curated during his life, such as Mir Baba, Gadge Bab, and other local saints of Pune.

The museum has a single gallery which houses over 150 articles from 70 saints. Mrs Marathe herself gives the visitors a detailed and comprehensive tour of all the articles, vividly describing the stories of most of the saints that the unique collection comprises of. The collection has been put together over the period from 1961 to 1999.
