The Indian Museum is the largest and the oldest museum in India. It was established 1814 and it houses different treasures ranging from sculptures to mummies. Its painting gallery boasts of a collection filled with artworks from different places and periods from across the country. While there are illustrated Jain manuscripts from the 12th C.E.-16th C.E., miniatures from Persia, Mughal miniatures and Rajasthani miniatures, it also has paintings which trace the trajectory of the development of Modern Indian art—starting from the company school paintings to Tagore’s expressionist artworks to the Bengal School of Paintings. It is also beside the Government College of Art and Craft, one of the oldest Art colleges in the subcontinent.
In this walk, this history of Indian Art will be explored, focussing on the painting section of the Indian Museum, tracing its roots from the Jain manuscripts and the Persian miniatures to the development of Modern Indian Art.
