Description

The building of Postal Museum and Philatelic Library in Kolkata was initially constructed to house the offices of the Director General of the Post Office of India in the year 1885. In the era of email and instant messaging, a postal museum is definitely a place to visit. The museum which opened in 1979 was reopened in April 2017 after being closed for over a year for renovation.

The museum though comparatively small in size as compared to other prominent museums in the city has a treasured collection which includes postal certificates signed by  C. V. Raman, postal saving book owned by Rabindranath Tagore , maps of old Calcutta, maps of old air mail routes, medals of war won by the postal department for serving during World War I and II, old postal mail collection box, vintage telephone handset, telegraph machines, various kind of stamps, postcards, revenue stamps, maps and postal saving certificates.
