Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.

Located in the Aga Khan Palace, one of Pune's most popular tourist destinations, the museum is dedicated to the lives of Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, and the struggle for India's independence. A few hundred tourists visit the museum every day, and the monument is also popular for its sprawling lawns and mesmerising architecture.

The Aga Khan Palace was built in 1892 by Imam Sultan Aga Khan III. Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi lived at the Aga Khan palace from 1942 to 1944, right after the launch of the Quit India Movement. Kasturba Gandhi and Gandhi's secretary, Mahadev Desai, died at the palace, and their samadhis are also located here. It spans over a large area that has many gardens and galleries. The museum also houses personal items of Gandhi like his spectacles, dining table, charkha, chappals and mala. The most popular items in the museum are the letter that was written by Gandhi at the death of his secretary, and the room that Kasturba Gandhi took her last breath in. The palace and the museum are now taken care of by the Archaeological Survey of India.
