Established in 1957, the Crafts Museum is a part of the School of Designs. It is under the administrative control of the Directorate of Handicrafts, Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
The museum houses a collection of antique artefacts from several Kashmiri traditions. These include Kani shawls, papier-mache, Sozni embroidery, copperware and Namdha carpets. It also features live demonstrations of Kashmiri handicrafts—such as wicker willow, copperware, turquoise ware, walnut wood carving, tapestry, tila embroidery, etc—being made. The museum has a design development institute, which works on creating innovative designs in traditional crafts.

The tumbler is a nineteenth-century artefact made of silver alloy with deep-blue enamel. It is designed with stylised woodpeckers and other birds placed among delicate foliage.
This Sozni sample was made in the nineteenth century with Kani beal, badamdar and lozedar designs. Pashmina thread is used for embroidery on pashmina cloth. The embroidery work was done in eight colours.
