Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.

The museum is housed in the Bhojpuri Study Centre, which was established at Banaras Hindu University in June 2009. This centre’s aim is to encourage knowledge about the art and culture of the Bhojpuri people.

The museum itself was established in the year 2012 by Bikhari Thakur. It displays the arts and crafts of the surrounding area as well as items from the daily lives of the people, such as metal utensils, bamboo baskets, clay toys, traditional paintings, handbags, etc. It also consists of various clay artefacts that originate in Gorakhpur district. The museum’s goal is to showcase the cultural and social heritage of the region, which mainly comprises eastern Uttar Pradesh, west Bihar and parts of north Chattisgarh, as the area has rich cultural traditions along with a strong political identity.

Some important collections in the museum include unique wooden toys and clay artefacts such as a lady with diyas—typically found during festivals or fairs.
