Briefly describe the history of the museum, its collection and donors.

Initially, used as the chief engineer’s quarters during the construction of Willington Island during the colonial era, the Cochin Port Trust has now converted this mansion into a museum to highlight the maritime heritage of the city of Cochin.

The Cochin Port Trust Maritime Heritage Museum displays include devices related to sea voyage and navigation that were used in different periods of time and a rare collection of photographs related to the evolution of Cochin as a port city since the colonial interventions. For instance, the photograph taken when the first train arrived at the harbour terminus in the island and the one clicked during the construction of old Mattancherry Bridge have many stories of the time to tell. Photographs of the construction of Venduruthy Railway bridges, Mattanchery Bridge and wharves, arrival of first train at Kochi, residence and car of  Robert Bristow, reclamation of Ernakulam foreshore, Mattanchery shore lined up with boats from Alleppey, etc., and models of mariners’ clock, mechanical calculator, underwater searching tool, steering unit, etc., are displayed at the museum.
